in the beginning vs. at first vs. in the first place

in the beginning과 at first는 동일한 의미로 "처음에는"의 의미로 쓰인다.
처음에는 ~였으나 지금은 상황이 다른경우를 표현하고할때 적절하다.

예문> In the beginning(At first), the medicine will make you fell a little tired and drowsy, but after a couple of days you'll begin to notice an improvement in your stomach

 

in the fisrt place는 약간다르다. "처음부터", "애초에"의 의미로 쓰인다.
처음부터 ~였다. 애초에 그러지 말았어야지 등을 표현할 때 적용가능하다.

예문> Why didn't you tell me in the first place that you've decided to leave?

 

참고로 in the beginning은 구약성서에 제일 먼저 등장하는 3단어이다.

At the beginning과 혼동이 되곤하는데, in the beginning은 기간, at the beginning은 위치에 있어 처음을 뜻한다.
